| The
Virtual College is a Pupil
Referral Unit working with young
people in Key Stage 4 across the City of
Birmingham who are not on school roll or
are unable to access any other appropriate
educational provision. |

|
Our
young people
The
young people we support are at risk,
vulnerable, often have complex needs and
can be hard to reach.
|
|
|
Our
Aims
We
aim to remove the young people’s
barriers to learning so that they become
re-engaged with mainstream opportunities,
thereby helping to break the cycle of
inequalities that often accompany young
people who have become disconnected.
|
|
|
Our
learning environments
In
order to achieve our aims we create
learning environments in which the young
people can feel safe and secure to enable
them to recognise their own strengths,
thereby enhancing their self-esteem. We do
not have a school building and work with
the young people in an outreach capacity.
We start by teaching the young people in
their homes and then help them to come to
a range of other venues in the city to
take part in group work and other learning
activities.
|
|
| We
use computers and the Internet to provide
our young people with access to education
anywhere, anytime, across the City of
Birmingham. Consequently our young people
become highly skilled at using Information
Communications Technology. |
|
| We
develop individual learning programmes for
each young person and provide them with a
curriculum tailored to their specific
learning needs including Key Skills, Basic
Skills, PSHE and work related learning. In
order to do this effectively, we use a
range of teaching strategies including
1-2-1 sessions small group work, on-line
learning and work experience. |
|
| Our
stepped approach helps to build the young
person’s confidence to engage in
appropriate future learning opportunities
when they leave the Virtual College. |
